The Zimbabwe Birdeye chilli (often called Piri Piri or African Devil) is a highly productive, compact pepper plant producing small (2-3cm), upright, intensely hot peppers that turn from green to red. Ranging from 100,000 to over 200,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), they offer a fruity, slightly salty, and fiery heat, ideal for hot sauces, stews, and container gardening.
Key Characteristics and Growth:
• Heat Level: Very Hot (170,000 – 200,000+ SHU).
• Appearance: Small, tapered pods (1-3 cm) that grow pointing upwards.
• Flavor: Fruity with a slightly salty/mineral taste, delivering intense, direct heat.
• Plant Size: Compact and bushy, usually 30-90cm, making them excellent for pots.
• Growth Cycle: Perennial in warm climates; they can produce year-round, except in winter.
• Care: Thrive in full sun and well-drained soil.
Usage and Tips
• Culinary Uses: Famous as the key ingredient in Peri Peri sauce, they are perfect for marinades, soups, and drying.
• Harvesting: They are extremely productive; the more you harvest, the more they grow.
• Handling: Due to high heat, wear gloves when handling.
• Germination: Seeds require warm temperatures 25C+to germinate
