Pygmy perch thrive in cool, well-oxygenated, and densely vegetated freshwaters. They prefer unheated setups with abundant aquatic plants, logs, and detritus for hiding and breeding. Pygmy Perch are a hardy, low maintenance fish with an olive, brown and silver mottled body with faint orange stripes along the flank. Once you introduce them to your pond you may never see them again. They are bottom dwellers and are very good at hiding (their silver colouring aids in this as well).
Feeding: Pygmy Perch eat a variety of foods including live, frozen, flakes or micro pellets. They are fantastic at eating mosquito larvae as well as any small insects in the pond.
Ideal Water Conditions:
• Temperature: 15°C to 22°C is optimal, though they can tolerate seasonal extremes of 5°C to 28°C.
• pH Level: 6.0 to 7.8 (slightly acidic to slightly alkaline).Water Hardness: Moderate general hardness (around 75 to 300 ppm).
• Flow: Slow-moving or still waters. They appreciate good filtration but dislike strong, direct currents
Key Environmental Needs:
• Plant Cover: Submerged aquatic plants and floating vegetation are essential for shelter, breeding, and scattering eggs.
• Bottom Layer: Sandy or fine gravel substrates with leaf litter and woody debris mimic their natural habitats.
Because of their small size, (most commonly, you will see them at around 3.5 to 6 cm, max size 7–8.5 cm), keep them with other small, peaceful tank mates or alone with other Pygmey Perch.
