Purchase directly from Growers HouseA Concentrated Insecticidal Soap, Mixed One to Fifty
The active ingredient is potassium salts of fatty acids at 49.52 percent by weight. Dilution runs one part concentrate to fifty parts water, which the label also writes as 2.5 fl oz per gallon. A 16 oz bottle therefore mixes out to roughly six gallons of finished spray. It is registered with the EPA under number 42697-60 and it is OMRI Listed for organic production. The label allows application right up to the day of harvest. Soap works by weakening the waxy outer layer of an insect, so the spray has to land on the pest. Nothing about it is systemic and nothing about it is residual. Coverage is the whole job. Wet both leaf surfaces and the stems, because undersides are where most of them sit.
Which Soft Bodied Insects the Label Covers
The label names aphids, spider mites, whitefly, thrips, mealybugs, scales and leafhoppers. It also lists adelgids, woolly aphids, psyllids, lacebugs, plant bugs, earwigs, grasshoppers, sawfly larvae and tent caterpillars. Repeat weekly as needed, up to three applications, with a shorter gap for a running aphid population. Mix fresh each time and shake the tank, because a settled emulsion sprays unevenly. There are real restrictions on the label and they are worth reading before a first spray. Skip it above ninety degrees Fahrenheit, skip new transplants and newly rooted cuttings, and skip anything already stressed by drought. Several ornamentals are called out as sensitive, among them chestnut, Japanese maple, mountain ash and Colorado blue spruce. The honest limit is that contact sprays need repeating and heavy infestations need more than one tool. Test a few leaves first and wait a day before doing a whole room.
