What Buffered Coco Coir Means, and Why It Matters Here
Coco arrives from the coconut husk loaded with sodium and potassium on its exchange sites. Buffering displaces those ions with calcium before the bag is filled.
Purchase directly from Growers HouseWhat Buffered Coco Coir Means, and Why It Matters Here
Coco arrives from the coconut husk loaded with sodium and potassium on its exchange sites. Buffering displaces those ions with calcium before the bag is filled. Rx Green ship this bag buffered, which is why calcium nitrate gets mentioned at all. It is not a nutrient charge and it should not be read as one. Feed from the first watering, because buffering is a chemistry step rather than a fertiliser. The pH range is 5.5 to 7.0 and each bag holds two cubic feet, which is 56.6 L. Sixty five bags come on a pallet, in recyclable film. Every batch is tested at source in India, on arrival in the United States, and again before it ships. Those tests cover pH, conductivity, mineral content, heavy metals, pesticide residue and microbial load. A batch that misses the specification does not get distributed. The material is OMRI Listed and compliant with Health Canada requirements.
Cation Exchange, and the Classic Coco Failure It Explains
Cation exchange is the mechanism under all of this, and it explains the classic coco failure. Unbuffered coir holds potassium and sodium that swap places with the calcium and magnesium you feed. The plant then shows a calcium deficiency while the reservoir reads perfectly. Buffered material has already had that swap forced, so the first three weeks behave predictably. Loose coir suits a filling line better than compressed bricks, since nothing has to be hydrated and broken up. It goes straight into pots or slabs and takes water immediately. Pure coir drains fast and holds a lot of water at once, which punishes overwatering less than peat does. It also means frequent, smaller irrigations rather than heavy ones. A pallet is the right unit for a room being filled in one go, and the wrong unit for a tent. Anyone wanting more air at the root should look at the 70/30 blend instead of this one.
