This light draws up to 40W on a 120V supply. Its spectrum runs from 380 to 780 nm, covering near UV through far red. Onboard dials shift the mix across blue, grow, bloom and red settings, and a second dial sets brightness. Kessil's Dense Matrix array blends the colors so the light appears to come from a single chip. The head is about 5 in long and 2.5 in across. A thermal system in the housing cools it without a fan. A 0–10V port links it to an aquarium controller such as the Apex, or to a Kessil controller. The power supply has a 10 ft cord. Hanging rings and screw hooks come in the box. Kessil sells a mounting arm and A-series gooseneck separately.
Running a Refugium Light for Nutrient Control
A refugium light grows macroalgae that soak up nitrate and phosphate from the main tank. Recommended coverage is 18 x 18 in, with a maximum of 24 x 24 in. That fits the sump chamber of most home reef systems. Many reefers run the refugium on a reverse schedule, lit while the display tank is dark. That helps keep pH steadier overnight. Start with a moderate setting and watch how fast the chaeto or other macroalgae grows. Harvest regularly so the algae keeps pulling nutrients out of the water. Try the grow or bloom setting first, then adjust based on how the algae responds. Outside the aquarium, it can light seedlings or a few herbs in a small space. For a full grow tent, a dedicated horticulture fixture delivers far more light.
