Why Grodan Macro Plugs Have a Slit Down the Side
A plug with a hole in the top is for a seed or an unrooted cutting. This one is for a cutting that has already rooted, and that is a different problem.

A plug with a hole in the top is for a seed or an unrooted cutting. This one is for a cutting that has already rooted, and that is a different problem. Roots coming out of an aeroponic cloner are fragile, tangled and going in every direction, and pushing that into a narrow hole breaks them. The slit opens the whole side of the plug so the root mass lays in rather than threads through. Close it around the stem and the cutting is seated with its roots intact. That single cut is the whole design, and it is why these get bought by the case rather than the bag.
Moving From EZ Clone Plugs Into Stone Wool
This is the bridge between two systems. An aeroponic cloner gives you bare roots in a collar, and a stone wool or pebble system wants a plug it can sit in. The Macro Plug is what carries a cutting across that gap without a check in growth. It drops into a 1.5 inch cell, so the Gro-Smart tray takes it directly. From there it transplants on into blocks, slabs or clay pebbles like any stone wool plug. A case holds 35 bags of 50, which is 1,750 plugs. That packs to about 18 lb in an 18 by 23 by 23 inch box.
Key Features
Slit, not a hole: The side opens so a rooted cutting lays in instead of threading through.
Built for rooted cuttings: Roots out of an aeroponic cloner are fragile and go in every direction.
Round 1.5 inch format: Drops straight into a Gro-Smart tray cell or any 1.5 inch site.
Bridges cloner to media: Carries a cutting from bare root into stone wool, pebbles or blocks.
No check in growth: Seating roots without bending them is what keeps the plant moving.
1,750 per case: 35 bags of 50, so bags can be opened as the propagation run needs them.
About 18 lb a case: In an 18 by 23 by 23 inch box, which ships without special handling.
Stone wool: The same substrate the blocks and slabs use, so the chain stays consistent.
Transplants on: Into blocks, slabs or clay pebbles with the plug left intact.
