This is a clear adhesive film on a roll, 18 cm wide and 120 m long, strung up as one continuous trap line. Common Culture builds it with root aphids in mind. Those colonies live below the media surface, out of sight, and the first sign many growers get is winged adults turning up in the air. A hanging glue line is where those fliers end up. The film takes a broad spectrum of other flying pests too, so the same run doubles as a general catch record for the room. Because the film is clear, it lets far more light through to the crop than an opaque tape of the same size. That matters when lines run above a canopy for a whole cycle. The roll is safe alongside bumblebee or honeybee pollination and alongside released natural enemies. It is non-toxic, and routine uses include tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, raspberries, roses, chrysanthemums, nursery stock and propagation crops. Put it up from planting so the first winged adults are caught as they appear.
Root Aphid Monitoring With a Clear Glue Line Between Posts
Hang the film between greenhouse posts or crop wires, running with the rows, and add extra lengths around entrances. Height depends on the crop and the pest you are watching. Winged root aphids take off from the media surface, so a line kept fairly low near the pots or slabs sees them early. Stretch the film taut, because a slack run twists and sticks to itself. Keep it off the foliage as well, since a leaf that touches the glue tears when it pulls away. Checking the same marked section on the same day each week turns a strip of glue into a usable record. A rising count of winged aphids over a clean-looking crop points below the surface. Tip a few plants out of their containers and look through the root zone for waxy white colonies. Gloves make unrolling a lot cleaner. A line coated in dust or bodies stops catching, so cut in a fresh length rather than leaving the old one up.
Key Features
Clear adhesive film: Lets more light reach the crop than an opaque tape, so long runs above a canopy shade less.
Long continuous roll: One roll sets out trap lines between posts without the gaps a row of cards leaves.
Built around root aphids: Winged adults leaving the media land on the line, often the first sign of colonies below.
Broad-spectrum catch: Other flying pests stick to the same film, so one line gives a general record of the room.
Pollinator and biocontrol compatible: Safe with bumblebees, honeybees and natural enemy releases.
Non-toxic film: The roll is non-toxic, so it can stay up over a crop from planting onward.
