This pack adds six plant sites to a flood-and-drain setup, and nothing in it pumps, times or controls water on its own. Each site is a 5 gal square outer bucket with an inner bucket nested inside it. The inner bucket holds roughly 13 L of clay pebbles or a similar medium. Aeration channels molded into its walls are there to improve root health. A centered drain fitting lets each bucket empty fully, which keeps standing water to a minimum. The plumbing comes in the box: six 3/4 in barbed tees, three barbed elbows, six screen fittings and twelve rubber washers. A 25 ft roll of tubing links the sites to each other and back to the controller. Screened fittings keep loose media out of the line. Hydrofarm rates a single Grow Flow control unit for up to 48 sites, depending on reservoir size. The kit ships at about 14 lb. A control unit and a reservoir are not part of this pack, and both are needed to run it.
Growing an Ebb and Flow System One Bucket Pack at a Time
This is the pack for adding to a running ebb and flow system rather than starting one. The buckets work with any ebb and flow controller, and they are built around the Grow Flow Ebb and Gro Controller. Set the new buckets, the controller and the reservoir on the same flat, level surface, with the tubing lying flat between them. Level matters more than it looks. A bucket sitting lower than its neighbours floods deeper and drains more slowly. Spread the new sites evenly across the controller outlets so every run fills and empties at a similar pace. Rinse clay pebbles in pH-balanced water first, and pick a medium that will not float off on the flood. Fill to about an inch below the rim, and set transplants low enough that the flood never tops the medium. Every added bucket raises the volume each flood draws from the reservoir. Check that the tank still covers the whole system with every site full. Extra sites can lengthen the fill time, so run one cycle with plain water after expanding. Inspect the tubing for kinks and cracks as part of routine maintenance.
