Why a Chiller Fitting Kit Is Sized to the Loop, Not the Chiller
This fitting kit matches a chiller loop to the tubing already on it. Barb size follows that tubing, and getting it wrong costs you a wet floor.
Purchase directly from Growers HouseWhy a Chiller Fitting Kit Is Sized to the Loop, Not the Chiller
This fitting kit matches a chiller loop to the tubing already on it. Barb size follows that tubing, and getting it wrong costs you a wet floor. This is the half inch set, and it suits an AACH10 whose pump, line and reservoir bulkheads all run half inch. Stepping a small chiller down to half inch plumbing costs very little flow at this capacity. The AACH10 is a tenth horsepower unit moving a modest volume, so the restriction is academic. Going the other way is where people come unstuck. Force three quarter inch tubing onto a half inch barb and the clamp never seats properly. What follows is a slow weep behind the reservoir, which shows up as a falling water level rather than as a puddle. Active Aqua build the same set in a three quarter inch version for exactly that reason. Check the fitting already threaded into the chiller before you choose between them. The part number here is AACHF1 and the barcode is 638104009201.
What the Replacement Fuse and the Rubber Collars Do
Two items in this bag are consumables rather than fittings, and they are the reason to keep one on a shelf. The replacement fuse protects the circuit, and when it goes the chiller stops without any other symptom. A unit sitting quiet in the middle of a warm week is usually a fuse rather than a failure. Sourcing the correct one on a Saturday afternoon is not quick. The rubber collars sit where the fittings pass through the housing at the inlet and the outlet. They spend their lives cycling between condensing cold and room temperature. After two or three seasons they harden and begin to weep. That leak looks like a cracked fitting and is not one. Both parts cost little and are awkward to chase down once they fail. This is a maintenance set and not an upgrade, so nothing in it changes what the chiller can pull out of a reservoir.
Key Features
Fitting size: Half inch barbs, matching a half inch loop
Barbed fittings: Two, for the chiller inlet and the outlet
Hose clamps: Two, and a badly seated clamp is where leaks start
Spare fuse: One, the part that stops a chiller without warning
Rubber collars: Two, for the inlet and the outlet ports
Why collars fail: They harden and weep after a few seasons of temperature cycling
Fits: The Active Aqua AACH10, a tenth horsepower water chiller
Other size: A three quarter inch version of the same set exists
Choosing: Match the barb to the tubing on the loop, not to the chiller
Scope: A maintenance and parts set rather than a performance upgrade
