Aim near the root zone rather than the pot edge, where runoff collects. For pH, the probe wants to go 4 to 5 inches into a moist sample. Give it a full minute of contact before the needle settles. Wipe the probe with a dry cloth first, because residue from the last pot will drag the reading. Then clean it and dry it when you are done. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Only the probe tips can go in liquid, so the body is not waterproof and a reservoir dunk will finish it. And this is a relative indicator rather than a lab instrument.
