What a Combined pH and Moisture Meter Tells You
Two readings from one pair of prongs. Moisture runs 0 dry to 10 moist. pH runs 0 acidic to 10 basic. The needle moves without a battery in it. That matters more than it sounds on a tool that lives in a drawer between uses.

Getting an Honest Reading From an Active Air Probe
Push the prongs into moist medium, not dry. An analogue probe reads through the water in the soil. A dry pot gives a number that means very little, and the same pot watered an hour earlier reads differently. Take two or three spots around the root zone rather than one. The pattern is what tells you something, not a single stab. Then pull it straight back out of the pot. Hydrofarm is blunt about this. Do not leave the probe in soil, and clean the prongs after every use, because corrosion on the contacts is what kills these meters. Treat the pH figure as a direction rather than a laboratory number. One point on the scale is a tenfold change in acidity. This tells you which way to move, and a calibrated pen tells you how far.
Key Features
Two scales, one probe: Moisture 0 to 10 and pH 0 to 10, read off the same pair of prongs.
No batteries: Analogue movement, so it works after six months in a drawer.
Read moist, not dry: The probe reads through water in the medium. A dry pot tells you little.
Sample two or three spots: The pattern around the root zone beats one reading in one place.
Do not leave it in soil: Hydrofarm is explicit. Pull it out and clean the prongs each time.
A direction, not a lab number: One pH point is a tenfold change. Use a calibrated pen for precision.
Indoor or outdoor: Same tool either way, and nothing to charge or replace.
